Relationships Matter

Management theorist like Fredrick Taylor and Alfred Sloan promoted a cool, rational approach to management that has held sway for over 100 years.  Taylor, the father of scientific management, was a mechanical engineer by training who sought to create efficient, machine-like workplaces.  Alfred Sloan, another engineer-turned-theorist, wrote, “loneliness, distance and formality” are the CEO’s duty and in business you need to be “rational, not personal.” 

I suggest a different approach—when working human beings, you need to be rational and personal because purely-rational workplaces disrespect human nature and throw sand into the motivational engine. This article explores the advantages of a more natural, relationship-based approach to management.

The Problem

If we liken the capitalist system to a vehicle, the "check engine soon"  light has been flashing urgently for quite some time.   The failure of our economic engine is systemic and ongoing.  The latest financial crisis is just the worst of a string of failures ranging from scandals like Enron, to incompetent auditors, excessive executive compensation, corrupt Wall Street analysts, complacent boards, questionable accounting, disengaged employees and weak leadership.

This creaking dinosaur of a system is ill suited for a turbulent global economy where companies need to be nimble, innovative and have everybody's head in the game.  The old model has created disengaged workforces where only 30% of employees care about their jobs (Gallup), only 30% of strategy initiatives succeed (Harvard Business Review), and where only 20% of mergers and acquisitions increase shareholder wealth.  Gallup estimates that we could save literally trillions in lost productivity if only we could more effectively harness the energy and creativity of our employees.


The Primal-Management Solution

What are we to do? Human beings, you see, are designed to be self managing without the need for a thick rule book or an army of overseers when they are embedded within committed and tightly-bonded work groups.  Companies that recreate this sort of natural, low-bureaucracy, low-oversight ecosystem, unleash human potential instead of stifling it.  By following Herr's advice, companies can take a rag-tag collection of squabbling individuals and bond them together into a powerful superorganism--a group of human beings who think and act as one.

The Science

Rewarding feelings are central in human affairs because they are proxies for the fundamental survival needs of our species.  In other words, nature uses rewarding feelings as incentives to promote vital survival behaviors like eating, drinking, reproducing, inventing, mastering skills, achieving goals, working cooperatively as a team, and protecting ourselves. If we create a culture that triggers these positive feelings we boost the emotional paycheck and thereby improve productivity and innovation. It's as simple as that.
